ElliQ : A technical solution that can make Elderly less lonely?

Over the years, technology has given a sudden boost in almost every sector. Whether it’s AI or other, technology has proved its best in all aspects. Now the technical advancement has reached its peak with one more great invention of removing loneliness from the elderly people.

USA government launched a competition for tech companies to offer innovative solution to some of society biggest problem, including chronic loneliness. Companies have to come up with their ideas and based on their idea, government will provide fund to the winning company.
There are many products in the list but the most pronounced in the market is ElliQ, manufactured by Intuition Robotics.

The product ElliQ is believed to be an active ageing companion that helps the elderly to remain active and engaged. It’s a smart robot and a personal voice assistant for the elderly with a personality that can help remind senior citizens of upcoming calendar appointments, show pictures from the family, receive and send messages and more.

The main piece has what looks like two all-white lamps stacked on each other. The top one moves around and lights up to give ElliQ a personality. The secondary piece is essentially a tablet that ElliQ can control to show more information and start video calls.

 It's also supposed to serve as a companion that people can have social interactions with. ElliQ use artificial intelligence as a sole.

The list of task that ElliQ can perform is as follows:

·         It’s a small robot with a head, removable tablet and camera.

·         The head glows when you say ElliQ which is pronounced as Elli Q and further respond to requests.

·         It can perform multitask. You can ask him to read facbook messages or it can also tell jokes and play games.

·         If you are getting bored you can ask him to suggest any activity according to your mood.

·         It can play radio, can manages your calendar, and friends and family can add appointment from their home.

·         You can video chat with your loved ones at any time you want.

This can be useful in western where old people do know about technology but it’ll take time to set its ground in the eastern parts. People are also relating it with the Amazon Echo but it would be too early to compare this device as it is specially designed for the elderly group.

Whatever emerges, it could save millions of pound in social care because loneliness can trigger ill health. Let’s hope it works, but practically it’s not easy to remove loneliness taking technology as a tool.
