Progressive Web Apps: All you need to Know

Back in 2015, Google came public with an exciting new approach to app development. This new method was referred to as Progressive web apps or PWA. Before we dive into the topic, let’s see why this new method was introduced.

Earlier, developers need to develop multiple apps across multiple mobile platforms.  Application made for android can’t be operated in IOS or Windows. Another major problem was to learn different language to work on different platforms. For example, if you want to make an android web application, you need to learn Java, similarly Xcode for IOS and DirectX and C++for Windows.

PWA offers to develop a single app and you can work across all your platforms and devices. They are safer than normal apps and programs because they don’t need to be installed on whatever device you are using. This simply means that there is no risk of accidentally downloading malware. Since they are not installed, they take less memory storage because most of the apps data is stored on a server. They have same interface irrespective of the OS we operate them on. The most prominent feature of PWA is that they are not dependent on an internet connection, so they work offline too.

Now, let’s see how PWA works and we can use it.

Three main technologies involved are Cache API, Service workers (Which caches data to allow the app to work offline) and Web App Manifest (Which stores other data about the app, such as its setting).PWAs can provide notification and carry out other background task, just like standard apps currently do.

You can simply use these apps by going to your Google chrome and type https://pwa.rocks or click here. There you can simply go to any app and add it to your home screen (tap the menu button (3 dots) and select Add to home screen). Once you are done with this, you will find a shortcut to the PWA version of the site on your home screen.
