NO Orange Passport : Passport to Remain Blue

Last few weeks were quite buzzing and the entire buzz was around the introduction of new color passport. Ministry of external affairs has decided to withdrawal its plan to issue the orange color passport. In this, we ll learn about:

1.     Passports
2.     Different type of passport
3.     ECNR/ECR (Emigration Check Not Required/Emigration Check Required)
4.     Need of Orange Passport
5.     Why Government decided to withdrawal its orange passport plan

Passport

Well before we jump to define the exact definition of passport, let’s first clear the difference between a passport and a visa. To differentiate between a passport and a visa one can say a visa is a sub set of a passport and hence to acquire a visa you first need to acquire a passport. Passport is issued to a country's citizen for international travel and identification while a visa is an endorsement placed within a passport that grants the holder official permission to enter, leave or stay in a country for a limited period of time.

Different type of passport

Ministry of external affairs issues 3 type of passport and the passports are identified from their cover color. These are:
1.     Navy Blue cover Passport (Known as REGULAR PASSPORT and is issued for ordinary travel)
2.     Maroon cover Passport (Known as DIPLOMATIC PASSPORT and is issued to Indian diplomats)
3.     White cover passport (Known as OFFICIAL PASSPORT and it is issued to individuals representing the Indian government on official business)

ECNR/ECR

ECNR and ECR are the reasons why the government introduced the  concept of orange color passport.
ECNR are those who are well qualified and need not required any Migration check whereas ECR are those who do not have secondary education and are travelling to work in one of 17 countries list
                1. United Arab Emirates (UAE)
                2. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA)
                3. Qatar
                4. Oman
                5. Kuwait
                6. Bahrain
                7. Malaysia
                8.  Libya
                9.     Jordan
               10.  Yemen
               11. Sudan
               12. Afghanistan
               13. Indonesia
               14. Syria
               15. Lebanon
               16. Thailand
               17. Iraq (emigration banned).

Need of Orange Passport

.

This measure is taken to protect the poor section who go out to work in other countries and become the victim of human trafficking. Orange passport will be easily identified and hence they will require to pass through number of checks.

Why Government decided to withdrawal its orange passport plan?

Recently on 30th January,18 Government of India finally decided to drop its plan to introduce a new orange passport and to remove the last page of a passport. An ECR passport, in reality has become a stamp of deprivation and a passport to exploitation at every stage, apart from the fact that it is a passport that offers no privileges or additional right to its holders and if we remove the last page from  the passports then it will directly question the basic use of a passport outside the home country because passports are used as an identity once you go out, your passport is the only identity proof you have in case you need to prove your identity.
