Welcome INS Karanj
Recently
India received its 3rd Scorpion submarine, under the project
PROJECT-75 named INS KARANJ. The historic induction of INS KARANJ was attended by
Naval Chief Admiral Sunil Lamba and his wife did the inaugural. A total of 6 submarines
are to be delivered under the project-75 and INS karanj is the 3rd
one. The first among the six was INS Kalvari which was scheduled to be
commissioned before 2012, but due to some unknown reasons, it was commissioned
late on December 2017. Next comes the INS Kandheri, which was commissioned in
the Indian Navy on the staring week of January and now on 31st of
Jan, we have INS Karanj which is earlier scheduled to be commissioned in the
Indian Navy in 2012.
One interesting
fact about all the six Submarines is that the first four of them will not have
any “AIR PROPULSION SYSTEM” whereas the rest two will be equipped with an Air
Propulsion System. Air Propulsion system basically enhances the capacity of a
submarine to stay under water for months.
There is a
word called “Scorpion Submarine”. Well, scorpion is a class and more specifically
a conventional diesel-electric attack submarine weight about 1,600 tonnes.
PROJECT-75
Project-75
or P-75 is an Indians project worth Rs 70,000 crore for the indigenously
manufacturing of stealth submarines. The deal is already late by six years and
was supposed to deliver all the six submarines by 2018 which now has extended
to 2022.
P-75 was
approved in 2005 and according to the schedule; the first of the six submarines
was scheduled to be delivered to the Navy by 2012.
The
ambitious P-75 comes under the guidance of MDL (Mazagon Dock Shipbuilder LTD).
About INS Karanj
As it was
mentioned earlier, it’s a diesel electric submarine and a non-Nuclear
submarine. The basic difference between a nuclear and a conventional submarine
is that the nuclear submarines are powered by a nuclear reactor while the
diesel one is by electric engines. There is another difference between the two
i.e. the nuclear submarine can stay longer under the water as compared to the
conventional one.
INS Karanj
can carry 18 torpedoes and can travel 1,020Km underwater. The 66 meter
submarine can dive up to a depth of 300 meter to elude enemy detection.
Another interesting
fact about the INS karanj is that, the previous INS Karanj served the nation for
34 years (1969-2003) and had also participated in the 1971 war.
